The Understanding and Celebrating our Roots project explored the historical links between Britain and Somaliland through capturing oral histories from Liverpool’s Somali community.

Granby Somali Women's Group was established in 1994 to provide a wide range of services and activities for Somali women, children, families and members in Liverpool.

The group engaged members of the local community in the process of researching and collecting memories about the interlinked heritage of the Somali community and the UK. The project assembled a team of volunteers and captured new oral histories from the Somali communities in Liverpool through engaging the public in a series of heritage picnic sessions. They provided a fun and social space for the community to get together and share their stories, memories and experiences.

The project disseminated the information it had captured about the history and heritage of the Somali community to the wider public via a celebration event which included opportunities to enjoy traditional Somali dancing and cuisine. The volunteer group also produced video blogs and a booklet for the older members of the community in Somali, alongside a new website to showcase their research.
