Venues across Newham helped to shape the sound of the borough. The Ruskin Arms in East Ham was the rehearsal venue for the Small Faces, and Green Street is the famed location in Asian Dub Foundation’s New Life video.
Led by Rendezvous Projects, Sound Waves: Music in Newham is using creative ways to collaborate with local communities across the borough to uncover and preserve six decades of undocumented musical contributions.
The project is working closely with local people, historians and volunteers to collect memorabilia of diverse music genres and historic venues in the borough. The team will host oral history sessions to capture memories of residents and explore highlights of gigs and events.
Other project activities include:
- training 10 volunteers to collect oral histories from the community
- hosting school workshop sessions
- designing a series of pop-up exhibitions and organise community events
- launching a website sharing the project's discoveries
- mapping Newham’s music and events in print, online and at exhibitions
