National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
Built in the late 1600s, the Cascade is a rare example of early engineering and nature-inspired design. It has delighted generations of visitors but is now in urgent need of repair due to water damage and structural decline. By restoring the Cascade, the Trust will revive a focal point in the garden and connect visitors to Chatsworth's heritage.
Chatsworth House Trust is a registered charity that looks after the house, garden, parkland and collections. All income from visitors and donors is reinvested into conservation, exhibitions, events and learning programmes.
The project will:
- fully restore the Cascade to working condition
- build partnerships with schools and local charities to help people understand the Cascade’s history and engineering
- develop activities that demonstrate the health and wellbeing benefits of being in nature and near water
- extend access and welcome new audiences to Chatsworth

Liz Bates, Area Director, Midlands & East, at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “Chatsworth’s Cascade is beloved by many, as the strength of public fundraising efforts shows. We’re pleased to support Chatsworth House Trust to restore this remarkable piece of historic engineering and make a step change in how Chatsworth engages with local communities and visitors. Thanks to National Lottery players, Chatsworth House Trust’s work will see many more people connect with and enjoy the heritage of this remarkable place.”
