National Lottery Heritage Grants £250,000 to £10 million
The Egypt Exploration Society is one of the world’s oldest institutions for the study and preservation of Egyptian cultural heritage and has pioneered British archaeology in Egypt since 1882.
Its significant collection includes the world’s largest papyrus collection and original watercolours by archaeologist Howard Carter, but much of it is inaccessible and at risk. With our funding, the Society is transforming its capacity to care for and preserve its collections.
A new centre for Egyptian cultural heritage aims to engage everyone with Egypt’s unique past. It will include new storage spaces and display facilities to better safeguard its collections, and will install a lift, accessible toilets, braille signage and a hearing loop so everyone can enjoy the visitor experience.
The project is also delivering new opportunities for visitors, such as:
- an activity programme, including school workshops, exhibits, replica handling and artist residencies
- a learning hub and specialist library to pioneer education and research
- a roof garden to enjoy Egyptian Natural Heritage, as well as new learning and wellbeing opportunities
Carl Graves, The Egypt Exploration Society’s Director, said: “This is the largest single contribution the Society has received in all its 143-year history. Thanks to National Lottery players, we can ensure that our irreplaceable archive and manuscript collections will inspire diverse audiences for years to come.”
