Buckinghamshire County Museum led on a project to create a hands-on children’s gallery based on Roald Dahl’s characters.

The gallery is housed in the 18th century Coach House, which is Grade II listed and sits to the rear of the main museum building. It uses characters from Roald Dahl’s stories to illustrate a range of topics and encourage young visitors to investigate the museum’s wider collection.

The gallery was designed to form a part of the whole Buckinghamshire Museum Service, encouraging greater footfall and educating more people about the role of the museum, rather than focusing on individual collections.

The gallery’s innovative approach emphasises access and interpretation, offering a range of interactive experiences based on characters like Willy Wonka, Fantastic Mr Fox and the Twits. Quentin Blake, the illustrator known for his depictions of Dahl’s characters, was also involved in the creation of the gallery’s logo.

The gallery also offers visits for school groups and since opening has won two major awards for education.
