Bradford was home to some of the earliest pioneers of cinema and the location of many classic films. The city’s cinema history reaches back to the 1890s. As a result, Bradford was awarded the status title of Bradford UNESCO City of Film. However, its rich history is still widely underappreciated – the project aimed to rectify this.

During the course of the project, the young people engaged with heritage items from the identified collections to learn about Bradford’s film heritage and learned new skills in filming and app development. 

They researched Bradford’s rich film heritage via museum and archive collections, web and print-based resources.

The final outcome was the production of a 15-minute documentary and a location-based app interpreting a timeline of Bradford’s film heritage – from the development of early British cinema to present day and beyond.

The project also contributed towards a Gold Arts Award achieved by the young people involved.
