This project will restore and celebrate the Grade II* listed Tilbury Cruise Terminal, where the Empire Windrush docked in 1948 to bring Commonwealth citizens to the UK.

Tilbury on the Thames Trust’s ‘Back on Track’ project proposes to transform Tilbury’s rail and cruise terminal complex into a new community and commercial facility which celebrates the site’s unique trade, military and migration history.

Windrush Day (22 June) recognises the contribution of immigrants to British society, particularly the British Caribbean community. ‘Back on Track’ aims to enable year-round public access to this important cultural heritage where it actually took place.

Currently awarded a development grant, the project will:

  • repair and reconfigure Tilbury Riverside Station to include a new café, event spaces and direct access to the Tilbury-Gravesend Ferry
  • tell the story of the Empire Windrush and the movement of goods, people and ideas through Tilbury over time
  • improve employability, build civic pride and develop local ownership though education and skills development, events, artist residencies and community grants
  • use sustainable techniques and technology, drawing on the tidal location and the port’s supply and recycling chains

Lucy Emma Harris and Scott Sullivan of Tilbury on the Thames Trust, said: “Back on Track will safeguard the heritage for the future by working collaboratively with the Port of Tilbury, community and commercial users. Local people and partners will be part of the story through leisure and skills development opportunities that anchor the Cruise Terminal complex within our community.”
