The at-risk Devizes Assize Court will be transformed to house some of the UK’s finest Bronze Age archaeology.

Since 1874, visitors have explored internationally important collections – including treasures from the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site – at Wiltshire Museum’s current site in Long Street. However, with 25 different floor levels, visitor access is challenging.

The £15million Assizes for Devizes project will restore the historic Assize Court and create an accessible new home for the museum’s collections.

The derelict Grade II* listed building is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, but thanks to this project, it will be saved for future generations. It is part of a wider regeneration scheme for the former Wadworth Brewery site, showing the impact placemaking can have on a community.

Alongside the move, the project will:

  • create a designated learning space, new café and multi-use community hub
  • develop new galleries to innovatively showcase the collection and unique local stories
  • deliver a programme of events and activities running throughout the project

The new museum is scheduled to open by 2030 when the current Long Street site will become a Collections Discovery Centre, ensuring continued access to the museum’s extensive archives.
