Our grant helped secure John Constable’s Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows for the nation.

This 1831 oil painting by the English artist was his only major painting still in private hands. Tate, along with four other institutions, joined forces to acquire the painting and created a network that allows the work to be seen by audiences in different contexts around the UK.

The five-institution network also created new opportunities for training and skills development, and broadened audience access – both in-gallery and online – to the painting, the story of Constable, and his contemporary significance.

Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows is widely regarded as a masterpiece and has iconic status as the pinnacle of Constable‘s achievement. It is considered one of the most significant paintings by any English artist.

A spokesperson for the Tate said: “It (was) unimaginable that this masterpiece might end up anywhere other than in a major UK national collection and accessible to audiences across the UK.”
