The York Army Museum Opened By HRH The Duke of York KG
The project brings to life the history of The Royal Dragoon Guards, The Yorkshire Regiment and their antecedents in a coherent, modern and family friendly environment. Using up-to-date interpretation methods, the museum now tells the personal and inspirational stories of regional soldiers, improving the learning experience for visitors, conserving and protecting the heritage of old regiments while enhancing the profile of modern regiments.
The project has created improved levels of engagement and participation for new and existing visitors. This is not only designed to achieve a significant increase in visitor numbers but also ensure that new learning opportunities are developed and tailored more clearly to meet the needs, including research requirements, of visitors. The project hopes to increase levels of participation and include a range of activities that will involve more volunteer work and focus on Open Days, Workshops, school visits and outreach activities.
Maj Graeme Green, Regimental Secretary of the Royal Dragoon Guards and Project Manager, thanked National Lottery players and HLF for making the project possible. He hopes that the people of York will visit enjoy and learn about the soldiers that have shaped the nation’s history over the last 300 years. For The Royal Dragoon Guards the museum represents an opportunity for the people of York and Yorkshire to learn about their Regiments and the men who served in it.
