A grant of £850,000 from HLF will regenerate Warrenpoint Municipal Park in County Down and place it back at the heart of the local community.

The park was opened in 1906 and still retains many of its original Edwardian features, which are deteriorating and are in need of urgent repair.  Restoration works will be carried out to conserve the listed bandstand and the 1930s pavilion building, transforming them into an events and exhibition space where visitors can learn more about the history of the park.

The original planting will be reinstated, paths and walkways resurfaced and new lighting and signage introduced. The parks more recent additions, such as the children’s play area and tennis courts, will be upgraded.  An outdoor gym and other new facilities will be installed to help attract more people to the park.

"The local community have been so involved in progressing and developing this project."

Paul Mullan, Head of HLF Northern Ireland

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) has worked with the local community through the project steering group to develop the plans, and create a shared vision for the park that will deliver a range of benefits for years to come.

Head of HLF Northern Ireland, Paul Mullan, said: “It’s wonderful to see such strong relationships built around the desire to safeguard the heritage of Warrenpoint Munipical Park. The local community have been so involved in progressing and developing this project and we are delighted to help them realise their vision and make it a reality.”

An exciting events and activities programme will explore and celebrate the natural, cultural and built heritage of the park through guided walks, talks and volunteer opportunities.
