Titus Salt School pupils are dyeing to learn their history

Year seven pupils from the school are working alongside the Fabric of Bradford project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and based at Hive in Shipley, staff from Roberts Park, Saltaire, and Salts Walks to give pupils an unusual introduction to the history of the local textile dyeing industry.

Over the course of the day pupils learnt about the colourful history of dyeing by taking part in a heritage walk, planting in the park, and making their own dyes to use with fabrics. A shelter in Roberts Park was used as a special workshop space on the day, and dye plants will become a permanent part of the display.

Heather Graham, Creative and Community Projects Manager at Titus Salt School, said: “This project is a unique way of introducing our students to their local history, from a very different perspective, and encourages them to take a genuine interest in their local community. A history walk around Saltaire with Salts Walks to see how fabrics were dyed in the 1800s, followed by a planting session in Roberts Park , and a fun, hands-on approach to the textile dyeing process with Hive should prove to be a fascinating and enjoyable day for them. I can’t think of a better way to learn!”
