In 2013, Hull was announced as the UK City of Culture 2017. Today, HLF launches a new campaign to encourage community groups to get involved.

A cultural programme is set to take place throughout 2017 to celebrate the unique character of the city, its people, history and geography. The programme is funded by National Lottery players, including £3million from HLF, plus support from other private and public sources.

Today, HLF launches a new campaign, Revealing Hull’s Heritage, to encourage community groups to come forward and develop projects that will explore, share and celebrate the fascinating stories and history that have shaped the city’s historic landscape. From civil war, maritime history, inspirational stories of the abolitionist movement, key historic personalities and events, to the changing landscape of the city, these projects will explore the heritage that is important to Hull’s local communities.

We want to encourage community groups in Hull to develop projects to explore, share and celebrate the fascinating stories and history that have shaped the city’s historic landscape, alongside the wider City of Culture programme in 2017.

Get involved

The HLF Yorkshire and Humber team welcomes applications for grants of £3,000-£10,000 for projects with a clear heritage focus that meet our criteria. Applications should be made through our small grants programme Sharing Heritage and submitted by 31 March 2017.

We can fund heritage projects which result in celebratory events, performances and exhibitions, but these should always be the culmination of a project in which participants have had an opportunity to learn about and enjoy the heritage. A project which is only concerned with organising a one-off celebratory event, performance or exhibition is unlikely to achieve the programme outcomes.
