Richard has worked with the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in a variety of roles since 2002 after beginning his career working in the construction materials industry, which included working on the construction of the Channel Tunnel. With BA Hons degrees in Economics and in Rural Resource Management, Richard also brings with him a deep interest in heritage in its wider context, with a particular interest in natural heritage and helping people learn more about the history of the natural environment and how to conserve it for future generations.

In addition to his work with HLF, Richard has worked for a number of other bodies, including Cornwall Council, the National Trust and English Nature, where he was responsible for a £3.5million landscape restoration project in mid Cornwall, providing him with first-hand experience of managing and delivering a grant funded project.

Speaking about his appointment and his vision for HLF in Wales, Richard said: “It is of course a challenging time for the Welsh cultural sectors with savings likely to be sought across all levels of government. However, the value of heritage to the quality of life of the people in Wales, its real contribution to the Welsh economy and its potential to assist in the regeneration of rural and urban communities across Wales is clearly recognised by decision makers and I want to make sure it remains that way.

"In taking on this role, I want to ensure that HLF is funding the full breadth of heritage across the whole of Wales. I want to ensure we’re investing in skills and growth, placing greater emphasis on lesser explored parts of our heritage, such as our natural heritage, and helping Wales’ heritage organisations to thrive, with the National Lottery’s support."

He replaces Jennifer Stewart who leaves HLF after sixteen years in the role.
