Heritage research in Scotland
For those with an interest in Scotland’s heritage sector, there is a growing body of material, and this page gives you an introduction to it by signposting other online sources.
HLF itself carries out and commissions a body of research and evaluation work. Much of it is UK-wide rather than specific to Scotland, but is of general application. You can find it on the HLF website under two headings:
Other useful sources of research
- HLF supports the work of the United Kingdom Heritage Research Group (UKHRG) hosted at Glasgow Caledonian University. You can sign up to a regular email research bulletin produced by UKHRG and the site has lots of useful links.
- Historic Scotland (HS) produces guidance and statements on a range of topics, such as the Scottish Historic Environment Policy (SHEP).
- Scotland’s Historic Environment Audit (SHEA) brings together a set of measures for the condition of the historic environment.
- Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) publishes data about the natural environment.
- The Historic Environment Advisory Council for Scotland (HEACS) was wound up by the Scottish Government in May 2009. HEACS produced a number of significant pieces of work on heritage topics, and these are still hosted online.
- The Scottish Government (SG) commissions and publishes a range of research to assist it in deriving its policies and programmes.
- The SG also publishes statistics on a wide range of topics including tourism and culture.
- Visit Scotland publishes the latest Scottish tourism statistics.
