The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is today announcing £260,000 of funding for Scotland’s historic churches, securing the future of four places of worship that are in urgent need of repair.

The funding will allow vital repair works to these important buildings, help them provide better facilities and make the churches more suitable for wider community use.

Colin McLean, Head of HLF, Scotland, said: “Places of worship are among the UK’s most historic buildings, with fascinating stories behind them. This money will pay for urgent repairs, whilst also helping to tell the stories of these special places to visitors. As a result the buildings themselves will be more used by the whole community, and properly cared for into the future.”

HLF Grants for Places of Worship announced today include:

Holy Trinity and All Saints Church, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire
This category C building at the boundary of the towns of Airdrie and Coatbridge has been awarded £113,500 for urgent repair works to the church roof and stonework.

Inchture and Kinnaird Church, Dundee
This category B listed Church was built in 1834 by David Mackenzie but gutted by fire in 1890 and re-built in 1891. It has been awarded £106,400 to undertake a programme of repairs and create a more flexible space for use by the community on the outskirts of Dundee.

Craiglockhart Parish Church, Craiglockhart
This category B listed building in Edinburgh is nearly 125 years old. It has been awarded £32,700 to make its tower - a prominent landmark within south-west Edinburgh - safe and helping to prevent further deterioration of the structure.

North Roe Methodist Church, North Roe, Shetland
This category C church is the most northerly Methodist church on the Shetland mainland and has served the local community since 1828. It has been awarded £7,100 to replace its windows.
