First World War heroes remembered in mid-Wales village

A Ceredigion parish will soon have its own memorial to remember those from the area who died in the First World War, thanks to the National Lottery.

Llanfair Clydogau is virtually unique in having no public physical memorial to remember those who were killed in the conflict a century ago - but that is about to change.

Having initially identified the absence of a memorial, local history group Hanes Llanfair is now working on a longer-term project to identify those from the area who served in the First World War, as well as investigate the effect the war had on the parish itself.

Alan Leech from Hanes Llanfair explained how the project will be rolled out: “It is quite rare for a community like ours not to have a memorial but this funding will help us put things right, and provide us with new information. We are planning to establish links with the University at Lampeter to ensure all our records are accurate and we have also involved the local primary school as we want to help today’s children understand what life was like here a century ago.”

The National Lottery grant of £9,000 will assist the group members to visit the National Library, the National Archives as well as Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire Archives.

Remembering the First World War

Ceredigion Assembly Member Elin Jones congratulated the group on their success: “In Wales we are placing great emphasis on remembering the First World War and its lasting effects. This project will play an important part in not only remembering the lives of those lost but help us to understand the impact that had on such a close-knit community. Having recently attended an event to celebrate the significant investment of National Lottery funding in Wales this is another example of the benefits it can bring. I very much look forward to seeing the results of the findings.”

Everything the group finds out during the project will be put online on the village website, as well as made into hard copy pamphlets available locally. Richard Bellamy is Head of HLF in Wales. He added: “Thanks to National Lottery players our First World War: Then and Now programme has helped people of all ages and backgrounds have a better understanding of the events a hundred years ago. The work being done in Llanfair Clydogau is another example of a community wanting to learn about its past in order to educate future generations.”
