Volunteering in Cardiff 1914-2014 is a two-year project that will explore the story of volunteering in the Southern Arc of Cardiff over the last century

Run by VCS Cymru, the project will preserve the memories of local residents for future generations. It will also celebrate the importance of volunteering, and motivate people to become volunteers themselves.

Using the First World War as a starting point, the project will make use of Cardiff's many  archives, museums and libraries. It will also work with Cardiff's voluntary organisations, and collect the oral history testimonies.

The project will result in:

  • The creation of  an online archive in partnership with People’s Collection Wales
  • A series of workshops, community radio programmes and podcasts, walking trails, and an exhibition
  • Learning and volunteering opportunities in archive research, museum exhibitions, digitisation, oral history and media production
  • Enable local residents to explore the heritage of Cardiff’s diverse inner city community

Explaining the importance of the £66,200 HLF grant which is funding the project, the Head of HLF Wales, Richard Bellamy, said: "This project will uncover many important stories, reflecting on key periods in Welsh life and periods of great change in our culture but will also demonstrate the important contributions volunteers have made in their local communities over the century."
