Call to action! Trustee for Wales sought for Heritage Lottery Fund and National Heritage Memorial Fund

Applications are sought from a wide range of people who have the skills and experience to meet the challenges² of this role.

The Trustee for Wales is an important member of the UK-wide Board, representing NHMF/HLF in Wales and representing the interests of Wales in Board discussions.  The successful appointee will actively engage with stakeholders in the heritage and cultural sectors in Wales and with the Welsh Government. The Trustee for Wales also chairs the Heritage Lottery Fund Committee for Wales³ and is a deputy Chair of the UK Board, along with the Trustees for Scotland and for Northern Ireland.

The successful candidate will have a broad appreciation of Wales’ heritage and a commitment to promoting public understanding and enjoyment of it to the widest possible audience, together with a strong record of leadership and achievement in Wales, and skills in strategic and analytical thinking, influencing and communication.

Dan Clayton Jones, HLF/NHMF Trustee for Wales, who will be standing down from the Board next January, said: “For anyone passionate about the heritage of Wales and the wider UK, the role of HLF Trustee and Chairman of the Committee for Wales is the most satisfying and fulfilling job imaginable. The fact that HLF defines ‘heritage’ in its broadest sense, means one deals with a vast variety of projects from canals to castles, from historic buildings to bats.  The difference that our grants make to the quality of peoples lives and the impact on saving those things we treasure is truly inspiring.

“Working with the professional staff in both Cardiff and London is a joy, and my six years have passed in a flash.  It has been a real privilege to have held this post, which for me has been the most personally rewarding of my career.”

The Board makes decisions on NHMF funding and HLF grants over £1m. Trustees are invited to attend project openings and can be asked to engage with the media and speak on behalf of the organisation at public events.

The closing date for applications was Monday 15 August 2011. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held on: Thursday 13 October 2011.

Notes to editors

• ¹ The HLF/NHMF Chair and 14 Trustees are appointed by the Prime Minister. They receive advice from heritage experts and work within laws made by Parliament and directions given by Government. Their decisions about individual applications and matters of policy are made entirely independently.
• ² The HLF/NHMF Board sets the strategic and policy framework within which grants to benefit the heritage of the UK are awarded. The Board determines the Strategic Plan and annual Business Plan, which sets out the activities which enable the HLF/NHMF Funds to deliver their strategies.  The Board makes decisions on all awards of over £1m and decides on allocations for the annual budget. In 2011, the Heritage Lottery Fund anticipates making awards totalling £250m while the NHMF anticipates a budget of £5m for new awards.
• ³ The Board delegates powers to regional and country committees which make decisions on awards of £50,000 – £1m. There are 12 committees – one for each English region, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They are made up of local people recruited through open advertisement. Committees are supported by grant-assessment teams based in the relevant region or country.
• HLF is administered by the NHMF – the UK’s ‘fund of last resort’ - set-up to save the most outstanding parts of our national heritage in memory of those who have given their lives for the UK. To date, the NHMF has safeguarded well over 1,000 iconic objects and places to the tune of £300m.
