Meet our committees: Stephen Welsh

Stephen Welsh
HLF Committee member for the North West, Steven Welsh
Curator of Living Cultures at Manchester Museum, Stephen Welsh, explains why helping heritage can be a catalyst for change.

Why did you want to join an HLF committee?

I was attracted by HLF's commitment to diversity and a desire to further understand the impact it has across the North West. I'm particularly passionate about how HLF engages with LGBT and BAME groups, and those from lower socioeconomic areas.
“As an HLF committee member you’ll be able to actively contribute to ensuring heritage plays a meaningful and enduring role in your region.”
What do you like about it?

I've enjoyed developing a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by heritage across the region, from repairing church roofs to developing employment skills.

It's immensely rewarding to be involved in the decision-making process, and quite exhilarating reaching a collective decision about a project.

What have you learned from the role so far?

I'm based in a city-centre museum and I had relatively little grasp of the sheer diversity of heritage that exists in the North West. I now have a better understanding and passion for the sheer range of heritage projects.

Having never worked closely with trustees or committees before, this role has provided an invaluable opportunity to expand my experience in this area.

What has most surprised or challenged you?

Just as I was appointed as a committee member my employer Manchester Museum submitted a bid to HLF. This meant that in my very first meeting as an observer I had to leave the room when the bid was discussed!

As a curator I’m quite often connected to HLF-supported projects or groups intending to submit an HLF bid, now I have to be acutely aware of any potential conflict of interest that may arise.

What would you say to anyone who is thinking about joining an HLF committee?

Heritage is such an important part of each of our lives and can have a transformational effect on whole communities. As an HLF committee member you’ll be able to actively contribute to ensuring heritage plays a meaningful and enduring role in your region.

Don’t be dissuaded if you have little or no experience of working with committees: staff and committee members are both patient and supportive.

What is your favourite HLF-supported project?

Recently I was lucky enough to speak at the opening of the HLF-supported project Life’s A Drag. The project explores the lesser-known Queer history of drag in Manchester and charts its ongoing transformation. The exhibition at Manchester Central Library regales visitors with oral histories, costume, and art; there is also an exciting programme of events.
