HLF committee member for the North East, Stacy Hall
HLF's committees make decisions on grant requests between £100,000-£2million. Communications consultant Stacy Hall reveals why she wanted to become a committee member for the North East.

Why did you want to join an HLF committee?

I have always lived and worked in the North East and have a keen interest in both the heritage and future of the region. I have spent the majority of my career working in tourism, economic development and regeneration and I can really appreciate how our local heritage assets play an important role in sustaining and growing the economy.

What do you like about it?

I enjoy learning about and understanding the diverse range of projects the committee has to consider. It’s very satisfying to see projects come to fruition and make a real difference to the local community.

What have you learned from the role so far?

I’ve gained an insight into many subjects I previously knew little about. For example, we receive many applications for landscape and natural heritage projects, which was a new area for me to understand. The committee is made up of members with varied backgrounds who all share their specialist knowledge and we are all continually learning from each other.

What has most surprised you?

One of the most challenging aspects is prioritising between the number of funding applications and the available budget. Competition for funding is very strong, but there is a finite budget and it’s always difficult when some very worthwhile projects have to be rejected on funding grounds.

What would you say to anyone who is thinking about joining an HLF committee?

You don’t need to be an expert in every aspect of heritage, as it’s important to have a wide range of different knowledge sets across the whole committee. The staff at HLF are excellent and extremely supportive in guiding committee members. They make our job as smooth as possible.

What is your favourite HLF project?

I’ve very much enjoyed seeing the Old Fire Station project from my home town of Sunderland develop through the application and approval process. The project involves the restoration and development of a stunning building in the heart of the city centre. It’s due to open soon, but has already acted as a major catalyst for investment and regeneration of the surrounding area and will transform that part of the city.
