Previously he spent three years as an academic studying aspects of historic buildings and landscape in the UK and abroad. He has worked for Historic Royal Palaces and recently as a curator, with a wide range of technical, managerial and public-facing duties.

In 2002, Edward took on an Executive Board role at English Heritage with responsibilities ranging from properties presentation to grant-giving in support of heritage initiatives across the country.

He then became Director General and Master of the Royal Armouries in Leeds, boosting the museum's research activity and public programme. He was instrumental in assuring its financial future, and led the initiation of a masterplan for the future.

Edward is retired but remains active in the world of research, writing, conservation, and advocacy for the enjoyment and public benefit of heritage.
