Great Harwood Memorial Park

Applicant: Proffitts – Investing in Communities (CIC)

Project Description: In partnership with Hyndburn Borough Council (HBC), this 22-month project will renovate Great Harwood Memorial Park in Hyndburn, Lancashire, engaging the community in various activities. These will include the creation of a forest school area, bat and bird box-making workshops and the creation of a biological heritage pack to share with local schools. Capital works will also take place as part of the project.

Decision: Award grant of £247,450 (76.74% of total costs)

African Festivals Project

Applicant: Moonraker Foundation

Project Description: This 15-month project will engage the local community in intergenerational activities to document oral histories of African festivals in Leigh from the 1980s to the 2020s. Activities will include the delivery of eight workshops in schools and universities, a touring exhibition, the production and distribution of an education pack and a visit to the International Slavery Museum.

Decision: Award grant of £48,696 (97.99% of total costs)

Connecting People and Nature in the Forest of Bowland AONB

Applicant: Forest of Bowland AONB

Project Description: A partnership project to engage people in the AONB and encourage them to care for nature at risk. Scheduled over three years, (November 2022 to October 2025), there are three strands of activity which include community engagement, outdoor learning, and community leaders.

Decision: Award grant of £227,488 (60.65% of total costs)

Sea-ing Sense – uplifting the spirits of visually impaired people

Applicant: Going for Independence Community Interest Company

Project Description: A two-year project, in partnership with Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, to engage participants with visual impairments with heritage in a natural environment. The project will deliver a range of workshops, guided walks and speaker events. Participants will have a space to learn about the coastline, connect with nature and share memories.

Decision: Award grant of £94,546 (100% of total costs)

Creative Underground St Helens

Applicant: St Helens Council

Project Description: A 27-month project to deliver a range of arts-led heritage engagement activities that explore and share the history of local creative industries. This project will be a key element of the St Helens Borough of Culture 2023 programme, and engage with young people and communities in the most socially and economically under-served areas. 

Decision: Award grant of £249,742 (91.23% of total costs)

Applicant: Blanchland Community Development Organisation Ltd

Project Description: Part of a longer-term strategy to increase visits and diversify audiences of Blanchland's Abbey and village. This 20-month project will include community archaeology excavations, creation of art installations and development of a website featuring artefact references and visitor information. To be delivered in partnership with the Parochial Church Council of St Mary Blanchland (PCC) with support from other partners and local businesses.

Decision: Award grant of £98,900 (77.02% of total costs)

Heeley Heritage Hub

Applicant: Heeley City Farm Limited

Project Description: A three-year project to engage people across areas in south east Sheffield: Heeley, Gleadless Valley and Lowedges Estate. It will create a new heritage hub to house archives, alongside the delivery of a programme of on-site engagement – exploring wellbeing, community heritage and archive digitisation.

Decision: Award grant of £249,910 (100% of total costs)

Seen and Heard

Applicant: Investing in Children CIC

Project Description: A two-year project to focus on the heritage of County Durham's children and young people after the Second World War, and the impact of the changing rail and coal industries on them. To support a core group of up to 20 young people to develop research and archival skills, as well as working with local museums and heritage organisations to increase and maintain the involvement of young people in heritage.

Decision: Award grant of £92,340 (100% of total costs)

Red, White and Blue

Applicant: Wakefield Trinity Community Trust

Project Description: To deliver a sporting heritage project that celebrates the 150th anniversary of Wakefield Trinity Rugby League Club. To collect, collate, and share new heritage material and to increase the skills and wellbeing of project participants. It will aim to deliver a series of workshops, a celebration event, and a podcast to highlight the stories that are discovered.

Decision: Award grant of £95,550 (100% of total costs)

Hull Swahili Diaspora – ROOTS (Part One)

Applicant: Hull and East Yorkshire Swahili Diaspora

Project Description: Delivered over a period of seven months, a series of workshops will share traditional Swahili cultural traditions and experiences of adapting to life in the UK. These workshops will explore elements of cooking, storytelling, and African drumming. The project will also host a series of heritage picnics and heritage-inspired art competitions for young people.

The Soul-Full Village

Project Description: A 12-month project to deliver a community-focused heritage programme consisting of nine events. Young people and community members will be invited to share their cultural heritage, focusing on food, language, clothes, hair, and skin.

Applicant: Kirkgate Arts

Project Description: A two-year programme of activities that will celebrate the diverse ethnicities, cultures and heritages that exist in Cumbria today. To deliver oral history recording and storytelling workshops, produce two new youth theatre productions and produce a 10-day exhibition at the Kirkgate Centre. Events will be delivered to coincide with Black History Month.

Boys to men journey, oral history project

Applicant: Ngamaba community path

Project Description: To engage multiple generations of African communities in Salford to explore and share cultural practices marking rites of passage for boys and men. This one-year oral history project will focus on delivering reminiscence workshops, as well as the creation of a website and photobooks to share with the wider community.

Decision: Award grant of £47,980 (99.89% of total costs)

Liverpool Irish Famine Trail: Stage Two (Release)

Applicant: Liverpool Irish Festival

Project Description: A 10-month project (from September 2022) and the second phase of a five-part programme that will engage, promote, and enhance Liverpool's Irish Famine Trail. As a result of the project, community groups will create artworks to be featured on the trail’s app and a documentary-length film will be produced for distribution online.

Finding Lost Norton Park: Digging Deeper for All

Project Description: To uncover and share the undocumented heritage of Graves Park, Sheffield – building on a previously successful pilot project. In partnership with the South Yorkshire Biodiversity Research Group (SYBRG), this project will produce wildlife and ecological surveys which will then be used to inform the development of guided talks and walks in the park.

Project Description: A 10-month project to research knowledge of the Future Lidos Group (FLG) and the wider sector. Research will be shared via an online Lido Toolkit and Our Lido Ltd will deliver advocacy work to raise awareness and build sector capacity for future lido schemes.

Stockton Rd United Reformed Church Heritage Project

Applicant: Stockton Road United Reformed Church

Project Description: This nine-day long project by Stockton Road United Reformed Church (SRURC) in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, aims to raise awareness of the Grade II* church and its heritage by holding open days. Local dance and Rainbows groups will be involved in activities so that heritage is shared via a range of mediums. The project will enable the church to celebrate and share its heritage with the local community.

Hornby: The Hidden Story

Applicant: Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council

Project Description: To deliver a project about toy inventor/manufacturer Frank Hornby. The year-long project will: deliver a series of talks aimed at adults, develop a walking trail around Maghull (Hornby’s hometown), create new interpretation boards, and display a functioning Hornby model railway in the town.

Project Description: This six-month, youth-focused heritage project will enhance awareness of traditional cultural practices of African communities, including stories, festivals, crafts, music, and dance. Delivered in Bradford, outputs include practical workshops and craft sessions, culminating in a final showcase event.

Coal Mining and Climate Change

Applicant: Cap-a-Pie Engagements

Project Description: To deliver a 10-month project engaging with Key Stage 2 pupils (80 children) in Newcastle through creative workshops using Dramatic Enquiry (combination of theatre and philosophy aimed at children). Children will explore the north east of England's coalmining heritage, focusing on how technology played a part in the global exploitation of fossil fuels, thereby contributing to the current climate crisis.

Project Description: This year-long project will engage with the wider Rochdale community to share their heritage based around Rochdale Association Football Club. Open events will be held for people to come together to share their stories and memories, as well as visits to local care homes and sheltered housing. The project will culminate in a showcase event.

(Un)Defining Queer

Applicant: The University of Manchester

Project Description: This 12-month project will investigate the collection at the Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester and develop an archive based around the promotion of LGBTQ+ narratives. Project activities will include studying the Whitworth Museum art collection to understand LGBTQ+ connection, production of an exhibition and the development of a 'queer glossary' created by volunteers.

Project Description: This six-month project based in Greater Manchester, aims to pass on knowledge of traditional African fabric dyeing techniques from older generations of African women to the younger generation. The garments will be made available for purchase through community markets. The project also aims to help women and girls overcome social isolation as a result of the recent pandemic.

Project Description: To restore two sash windows at the Grade II listed former Oxenhope Baptist Sunday School (Keighley). The project also proposes to share the history of the building, documentation of the restoration process and details of local walks past the window via a website.

Project Description: To deliver a range of heritage events as part of the Hartlepool Folk Festival and the newly developed Family Folk Festival. Activities will include dance and storytelling workshops as well as talks exploring the heritage of folk traditions. It aims to engage the local community with folk traditions and customs.

Africa – Our Way of Life

Project Description: To celebrate African culture, its rich history and contribution to the world. The project will deliver six workshops exploring African music, crafts, history, and cultural practices, as well as a celebration event to close the project. It will run from September 2022 to April 2024.
