The North of England is famous for its historic railways, and Stockton and Darlington Railway is an exceptional piece of the network. Celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025, the heritage railway has received over £3million National Lottery funding. 

The project will empower communities along the line's 26 miles to organise their own activities through a programme of smaller grants. Over its lifetime the project aims to: 

• attract over 360,000 visitors each year 
• create 30 new direct jobs, 300 indirect jobs and 37 construction jobs 
• engage 300 volunteers

Young people will have the opportunity to engage in exciting activities, while students will be able to gain work experience and undertake apprenticeships.

Councillor Jonathan Dulston, Leader of Darlington Borough Council

A new building, the Darlington Locomotive Works, will house the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. The historic Carriageworks will be refurbished to house a new exhibition space, archive and bespoke children's play area designed to link with the site’s heritage. 

Councillor Jonathan Dulston, Leader of Darlington Borough Council said: “The award will enable us to display and interpret our amazing railway heritage for the enjoyment of all our visitors, to cherish and maintain it for the benefit of generations to come.” 

The award will support tourism, trade and industry in the area.
