Many of the people who shared their stories came to the UK during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s to live and work in Derby.

Many of the men who settled in Derby were service personnel during the Second World War, who went on to work at local manufacturing companies such as Rolls Royce. Many women came after the war to join their partners, later working in local health care professions and transport services specifically developed to meet post-war needs.

Around 36 young people, including some from disadvantaged backgrounds or who were at risk from gang influences, participated in the oral history training programme. The project included a well subscribed formal launch event, wider opportunities for volunteering, and an exhibition that toured around Derby as part of the city’s Black History Month. A resource pack and DVD set for schools and community centres were also created.
