OutStories have collected and preserved the heritage of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) communities of Bristol and the surrounding area.

Volunteers collected personal reminiscences, memorabilia and oral histories which have identified and recorded this hidden area of the city’s heritage.  In particular, the project unearthed material from the Bristol City archives including programmes from Bristol Pride festivals as well as early documents relating to the Bristol Gay Switchboard, Gay West and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality.  This enabled people to learn about the heritage of the LGBT+ community in Bristol.

The project developed a strong partnership with the Bristol Museum Service. The hidden histories revealed by this project were interpreted and explained at both M Shed and the Bristol Record Office. These exhibitions were also accompanied by a community-based travelling display which ensured more and a wider range of people engaged with the heritage.

The OutStories website has more information on the project.
