Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre have a new museum and archive centre, thanks to National Lottery players.

The Bury Museum and Archive Centre is located on the lower ground floor of Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre. The space contains an exhibition space, a study area and offers the chance to look closely at museum objects, manuscripts and local records.

The facility’s aim is to integrate the study of the local area through museum objects and manuscripts, so visitors can piece together the rich evidence that makes up local heritage.

It offers a rolling programme of exhibitions, based on an innovative approach to curation where visitors are encouraged to view objects from different perspectives. The archive contains records kept by local organisations and individuals, including family letters and business records.

The new space also has designated storage spaces and there is full access via a lift.

During the project, Bury Council worked with the archive centre to arrange volunteering opportunities for disabled people. The museum also worked with universities to offer students the chance to create their own exhibitions.
