The Argos Hill Windmill, which retains nearly all of its original machinery, is one of the most complete examples among the 50 post mills surviving in the UK. However, serious deterioration had led Historic England to list it as Heritage at Risk.

A trust set up to restore the structure energised local volunteers supported by professional millwrights to save the mill, which is now re-opened to the public. Its four sweeps were replaced and, in November 2016, turned in the wind for the first time in more than 80 years.

The safe, weatherproof mill has now been removed from the Heritage at Risk register. Teaching packs were produced for local schools and a lively website includes a ‘virtual tour’ for people unable to visit in person.

The trust has attracted more volunteers and has strengthened its ability to undertake further restoration and maintenance.
