Grants for Places of Worship

Making critical repairs to All Saints Church, Houghton Regis; engaging people in their exceptional heritage

This project will undertake urgent repairs and create a Heritage Zone in the church. Activities include school sessions and an exhibition developed by the local History Society. Volunteers will be recruited and trained to provide tours to attract new visitors and enable an increase in opening hours.

Decision: Award grant of £224,300 (73%)

Martham: Preparing the Future - Preserving the best of the past

Carry put high level repairs and replace water good of this Grade I listed church. A range of activities will engage people with the heritage of the Church including church guides, website and display boards.

Carry out repairs to the walls, tower and pew floorboards within a Grade I listed church and arrange parallel activities.

Kingston Church, Cambridgeshire - Heritage and Wall Paintings Interpretation and Education Project and Church Repair

Undertake repair and conservation work to address the urgent needs of the nave roof, plaster ceiling and late sixteenth/early seventeenth-century wall paintings, as well as interpreting the heritage of this Grade I listed church.

Upskilling Volunteers to provide a Heritage focused Wild Welcome at Essex Wildlife Trust visitor centres

To deliver a training programme to enable 55 volunteers to become welcomers at ten of Essex Wildlife Trust's visitor centres, offering information to visitors on the sites' natural, historic and physical heritage.

Four-spotted Moth on East Anglian Chalk

To conserve the nationally scarce Four-spotted Moth (a priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan) by working with landowners, volunteers and Local Highways Authorities to monitor and improve a network of 16 known habitats across Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

Experiencing Ickworth Uncovered

This project aims to capitalise on a phase of urgent structural repair and conservation works and associated art installation to better engage with audiences and to better tell the story of the art and architecture re-presenting the house during the works, improving access, interpretation and opportunities for volunteering, learning and training.

Welwyn Garden City - Live, Work, Play, the final phase - 1970 to 2000

In the lead up to Welwyn Garden City's centenary in 2020, record the memories of the town's residents between 1970-2000.  Includes volunteering, exhibition, book, dvd.

The Great English Earthquake of 1884

Improve access to the grade I listed church through levelling floors, electrical work and installation of a hearing loop. Activities will engage volunteers and residents in research, talks and tours relating to the built, archaeological and social heritage of the church and village, as well as producing physical and digital interpretation.

Southend High School for Boys - digitalise the hard archive

The project will begin to digitise the archive and make it available as a learning resource for the school and community, with a specific focus on - SHSB and WW1.  Includes heritage resource for curriculum development, exhibition and performance.

Heritage Discovery at Pishiobury Park

Explore the prehistoric heritage of Pishiobury Park through archaeology work and share the story of the site through new interpretation. A range of opportunities for volunteers to participate in hands-on heritage activities and develop skills. Improving access to areas of the park will open the site up to new audiences and the proposed archaeological research will uncover its heritage.

The Millfield Link

Using the Link Road mural as a focus, the project will explore Peterborough's history of social integration by involving the community in researching and creatively interpreting the heritage of their local area.  Activities offer focused skills development and volunteering opportunities.

Norfolk Windmills Trust: Securing a More Sustainable Future for Norfolk's Mills

The project will employ a Project Officer, up to three consultants and gain support from an HLF Mentor to carry out a Portfolio review, Governance Review and produce a ten year Business Plan for six key sites.

What's Under Our Feet? Community archaeology at Welwyn Roman Baths

Actively engage 20 young people aged 8-16 in archaeology, record and interpret heritage, enhance the skills and experience of museum staff and build connections with local communities.

Engaging Saffron Walden with the town's Battle Ditches

Project to improve historical interpretation for two of Saffron Walden's landmarks: The 'Battle Ditch', which once enclosed the medieval town area and glacial boulders collected by a 19thC naturalist.  Workshop and talks.

Young Roots

Women we want to be-local heroes who changed our world

The Council's Cultural Development Team will work with Chelmsford Museum and Museum of Power to deliver this project for participants from local Guide packs and a group supported by Essex Multicultural Network to enable young women to research local women that may serve as role models.
