St. Mary's Church, in the heart of Pendle, has a rich history dating back to 1250. The tower is the oldest part of the present building and was previously restored in 1653 and 1712. The Wordsworth organ, installed in 1890, was last restored in 2000. St. Mary’s is one of few churches that have kept the rushbearing tradition alive, celebrating this heritage with an annual rushbearing service.

The work has enabled the restoration of the church, providing a new roof, renewed pointing and leadwork on the tower and west wall. It has also facilitated treatment of the dry rot which developed between the organ swell box and the west wall in a concealed area.

Following research on the church’s history and heritage, the project has produced a new booklet, a heritage website and guided tours in addition to the restoration work, and has hosted a number of study days for children from local primary schools.

The church has also hosted a successful Care of Listed Buildings course for the Diocese of the adjoining area, helping to equip others with the skills to look after their churches for the future.
