Young people in Tredegar explored the history of a local memorial plaque through creative work and film-making.

The young people wanted to investigate the stories behind a memorial plaque preserved in the chapel now used as the headquarters of Kidz R Us – a young people’s performing arts centre. They researched the history of the eleven young men listed on the plaque, found out about local life at the time, visited the Imperial War Museum to find out more about the First World War, saw a performance of ‘Warhorse’ and produced a documentary film and exhibitions on their findings.

Younger participants (from four years old) created their own ‘warhorse’ – a sculpture standing six feet high. The results of the project were showcased at a premiere event for local people, who were invited to see the film, to view the various documents and photographs unearthed, and to talk to the young people involved. The plaque remains on display and is publicly accessible.

The aims of the project were:

  • To create a strong sense of community and roots in the local area for the young people of Tredegar, their families and others.
  • To learn about an important part of Tredegar’s past through discovery and exploration, and to enjoy learning.
  • To produce a tangible result, the documentary, and to develop a sense of pride and their own achievement.
