The construction of a demonstration light railway has preserved vital engineering skills, and helped young people get in touch with their heritage.

The Moseley Railway Trust led on this project to set up a young people’s volunteer group with the aim of turning a previously inaccessible field into a popular railway display area.

The group used original, salvaged material and worked with experienced volunteers to recreate an industrial light railway track. Volunteers learned about the role industrial railways played in history, and helped create three permanent outdoor exhibition panels for visitors.

The specialist track allowed the Trust to publicly showcase many of its exhibits for the first time. It is often used in events, including a series of First World War events demonstrating the role which railways played in transporting troops and ammunition to the trenches.

Since the project, several of the young volunteers have gone on to secure apprenticeships or employment in the engineering sector.

Phil Robinson, Trust Chairman, said “Our younger members worked as part of the group delivering this project. This allows them to learn tangible engineering skills and also to understand the importance of working as part of a team.”
