The ‘staircase’ of fourteen locks at Rogerstone, on the Crumlin Branch of the canal, rises 168 feet in less than one kilometre. It is significant for its unique design, quality engineering and the part it played in the region’s social and industrial development.

Phase one has seen the restoration of two pairs of locks, with urgently-needed repairs undertaken by specialists using traditional skills and materials where practicable. An access and education officer has developed an ongoing learning programme, with numerous training and volunteering opportunities.

Already, hundreds of schools have accessed the educational materials and thousands of visitors have flocked to Fourteen Locks, taking advantage of the new website, nature and heritage trails and guided tours.

Newport County Council is working closely with the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust to deliver the overall vision for the area, which also includes enhancing its value as a green corridor, rich in landscape and wildlife.
