Inchinnan Historical Interest Group

Hi! We are Inchinnan Historical Interest Group.  We formed in 2012 with the purpose of advancing the education of the public in the history, culture and heritage of Inchinnan and surrounding area.

In 2017, after receiving funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund we embarked upon our biggest project to date: ‘597AD St Conval to All Hallows-1420 Years and Counting’.  Led by volunteers from the local community, the project focused on an archaeological survey of the All Hallows site, where there has been a church since medieval times, and of the surrounding area.

There were many different aspects to the project.  We worked with hundreds of local school children, security at Glasgow Airport (due to the site’s proximity to Glasgow Airport) and engaged many experts in different fields who were interested in aspects of the project such as the links of Inchinnan to the Kingdom of Scotland, the ‘ Govan school’ of stones that exist in the area,  the medieval churches that existed there with one that possibly had ‘floor covered in skulls’.

The project was very successful with excellent feedback from local schools, the involvement of around 40 volunteers, and several ‘finds’ such as stained glass and medieval coins.  Whilst digging, our lead archaeologist, Heather James led us to uncovering the floor of the 1904 church.

We hope to explore the ‘All Hallows’ area further in the future.  It would be good to increase the members of our group or the number of volunteers that we could engage in a project.

Our work has been documented in local press, Archaeological publications, on STV’s ‘Live at Five’, our website and social media.  Please take a look at our links and get in touch if you would like to say hello.  As we are run by volunteers, not experts, any tips on improving our social media are most welcome! We are currently looking into making our education pack and worksheets available to all on our website.
