With restored buildings and a host of new education programmes, people can better connect to Great Dixter’s historic gardens.

The famous house and gardens of Great Dixter in Northiam, East Sussex attract 50,000 people each year who come to admire planting displays and learn gardening skills from the professionals. The Great Dixter Charitable Trust manages the site and was established in 2004 before the death of property owner and expert gardener, Christopher Lloyd. With the help of an HLF grant, the trust has been able to continue Lloyd’s legacy by buying out the other property shareholder, restoring historic buildings, enhancing facilities, and creating education courses.

The new positions of curator and archivist were created to care for and engage people with Great Dixter’s collections, and a learning officer was hired to direct educational activities.

During renovations, Great Dixter redesigned its environmental sustainability plan, which involved installing solar panels on rooftops and ground source heating pumps underneath car parks.
