The Burnley LGBT Heritage Project focused on capturing the hidden histories of LGBT+ communities to explore the life stories, experiences and memories of people living in the area.

The historical marginalisation of LGBT+ people has affected the documented heritage of this community, creating a pattern of lost and hidden histories and stories. Run by the Lancashire LGBT+ Centre, the project focused on addressing this invisibility by increasing public awareness of Burnley’s LGBT+ heritage through events and workshops. Volunteers worked together to capture new oral histories, collate archive resources and create a short documentary film to share the stories they had found with others.

The new information and archive materials informed the development of a digital LGBT+ heritage trail, enabling people to use their phones to access heritage information and images while taking a digitally guided tour around Burnley. This app was complimented by the creation of a pamphlet.

All materials produced as part of this project are now available as part of the Lancashire Archives.
