Heritage Lottery Fund Northern Ireland are delighted to announce a new Young Roots project for Northern Ireland.
The Foyle Ambassadors Project is led by The Loughs Agency (an agency of the Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission, established under the Good Friday Agreement). They partner with Western Education and Library Board youth service to promote skills development for 2 cohorts of young people. Focusing on the natural heritage of the River Foyle participants will develop skills to achieve the John Muir Environmental award. They will develop identification and recording skills, knowledge of the history of the Foyle area and issues facing this landscape today.
The evaluation of a pilot project completed in May 2014, showed the programme had potential to impart confidence and change perceptions of the heritage of the Foyle. The appetite for a more in-depth project was evident as consultation with local young people, partners and stakeholders demonstrated support. The young persons statement illustrated a variety of interests in the wildlife and history of the area as well as a desire to learn more about the impact of the river on daily life. Others expressed a desire to know how to improve the area and protect its natural heritage.
We look forward to working with the project and supporting them in achieving a strong set of outcomes for young people.
